Six rep spreadsheet platforms — some need an agent, some ship direct, one table

Half these platforms cannot ship to you and half don't need an agent at all. Sort that out first and most of the other questions answer themselves.

TL;DR

The platforms people call 'spreadsheet sites' split into two groups that work nothing alike. Taobao, Weidian and 1688 ship domestically only, so every link in those sheets has to be routed through an agent. Temu, DHgate and Alibaba.com ship to you directly, so there is nothing to convert and no QC stage. Knowing which group you are in answers most of the questions.

Group A and Group B stock, priced side by side

One index, twenty items. Whether a row needs an agent or ships to you directly is a property of the platform it sits on, not of the item — the same jacket at the same price can be either, which is the whole point of the table above. Whichever group a row belongs to, we can supply the item directly and the platform stops mattering.

Every row is a real listing and every photograph is the supplier's own, self-hosted rather than hotlinked. Column four is model-level fact — the year, the designer, the material or the sizing behaviour — not a category description. Where a name identifies no specific model, it says so with the measurement that actually transfers instead of inventing a story.

Anything above, at the factory rate. Send a screenshot, we quote it, you pay, it ships — single units at wholesale, better on volume, 6–12 days to most of Europe and the Americas.

Group A — the platform needs an agent

These sell to buyers inside mainland China. A link is a product ID that has to be rebuilt against a buying agent before it becomes an order. You get a QC inspection stage in exchange for the extra steps.

Group B — the platform ships to you

These handle international delivery themselves. No agent, no link conversion, no consolidation decision — and no warehouse inspection before your parcel leaves the country.

The single table that answers most questions

Six platforms, and what each actually requires of you.
PlatformAgentConvert linksQC stageConsolidateBest at
TaobaoRequiredYesYesYesBreadth of catalogue
WeidianRequiredYesYesYesStock that lists nowhere else
1688RequiredYesYesYesFive or more of one thing
TemuNoNoNoAutomaticSpeed and low-value basics
DHgateNoNoNoNot possibleOne item, one trusted seller
Alibaba.comNoNoNoFreight forwarderImporting at quantity
Verdict: the QC column is the real trade-off. Group A costs you three extra steps and gives you the right to inspect your item in a warehouse and refuse it for the price of domestic Chinese postage. Group B removes the steps and removes that right.

Why "spreadsheet" means two different things

In Group A a spreadsheet is a conversion queue. Every row holds an ID that is worthless until routed through an agent, which is why converters exist and why sheets survive agents closing — the IDs outlive the wrappers.

In Group B a spreadsheet is a shopping list, or on DHgate a seller list. Nothing needs processing. The value is entirely in the curation: which storefront, which item, what actually turned up.

Running Group B links through a link converter does nothing, and is one of the more common wasted steps for people arriving from the agent side of the hobby.

Choosing by what you are buying

  • One specific model or colourway → Taobao or Weidian. Nothing else has the catalogue.
  • Something where fit or finish matters → Group A, for the QC stage alone.
  • Several items at once → Group A, because consolidation collapses several freight charges into one.
  • Five or more identical pieces → 1688.
  • One cheap thing, quickly → Temu or DHgate.
  • Genuinely importing to resell → Alibaba.com with Trade Assurance, or 1688 through an agent.

Where AliExpress and Shein sit

Two platforms come up constantly and are absent from the table above, so it is worth placing them.

AliExpress belongs firmly in Group B. It ships internationally, needs no agent, and carries the most developed buyer protection of any direct platform here — an escrow-style hold with a defined dispute window. It is usually the priciest of the direct options, and that protection is most of what you are paying for. If a spreadsheet points at AliExpress, buy from it directly; there is nothing to convert.

Shein is Group B as well, but it is a vertically integrated fashion retailer rather than a marketplace — it is not a place third-party sellers list, so the notion of a curated seller sheet does not really apply. It also sits on the dupe side of the line rather than the rep side, which is a different category of purchase with different expectations attached.

Two things that are true of all six

The split runs deep, but a couple of realities apply regardless of which group you are in.

Import charges do not care about your route. VAT, GST and duty are assessed on goods entering your country, not on how they got there. An EU buyer pays VAT from the first cent on a DHgate parcel and on an agent parcel alike. The only genuine variation is whether the charge is collected up front by a tax-paid line or presented at the door with a handling fee attached — which is a convenience difference, not a saving.

Sizing behaves identically everywhere. Chinese apparel is cut for a different average build across all six platforms, and footwear lasts run the way they run irrespective of who sold you the shoe. Measure once in millimetres and work from the listing's centimetre table rather than the letter on the label — that advice does not change based on which group you bought from. The size converter covers it.

What this cluster does not claim

These pages are written to be accurate rather than to rank. The measurable US search volume across this entire category is about 350 a month — w2c spreadsheet at 210, temu spreadsheet at 90, and two smaller terms. Searches for "dhgate spreadsheet" or "weidian spreadsheet" do not register in the keyword data at all.

They exist because the questions get asked constantly in Discord servers, on Reddit, and increasingly to AI assistants — and because the answers circulating are mostly wrong in the same specific way: treating six platforms with three different business models as though they were interchangeable.

The two groups, side by side
Group A — agent required
PlatformsTaobao, Weidian, 1688
Ships to youNo — domestic only
Convert linksRequired
QC inspectionYes, with right of refusal
ConsolidationYes — the main saving
Time to door3–6 weeks
Group B — ships direct
PlatformsTemu, DHgate, Alibaba.com
Ships to youYes
Convert linksNothing to convert
QC inspectionNone

The QC row is the trade-off. Group A costs three extra steps and buys you the right to reject a parcel for the price of domestic postage.

RepBuyTools — built and maintained by a sourcing team that has been shipping parcels out of Guangdong since 2019. Every figure on this site is either measured from real parcels, taken from a named third-party source, or labelled as an estimate. We are not a buying agent, and which agent ranks where is decided by sourced data rather than by any commercial arrangement.

Before you ask — these come up a lot

Which Chinese shopping platforms need a buying agent?

Taobao, Weidian and 1688 — all three sell to mainland Chinese addresses and do not ship abroad usefully, so an agent buys, receives and forwards on your behalf. Temu, DHgate and Alibaba.com deliver internationally themselves and need none. That split decides everything downstream: Group A gives you a warehouse inspection with a right of refusal and runs 3–6 weeks, where Group B runs 1–2.

Do I need to convert links from a DHgate or Temu spreadsheet?

No. Converters exist to pull a Taobao id=, a Weidian itemID= or a 1688 offer/ number out of a URL and rebuild it against all 40 agents the tool supports, which between them use 13 different URL formats. DHgate and Temu addresses already reach you, so there is no ID to extract and no agent to route it to. Group B rows are a shopping list, not a queue.

What is the real advantage of the agent route?

The inspection stage. Your item is photographed at a Chinese warehouse and held until you respond, so a wrong size or a visible glue line can be refused for the price of domestic postage — a few dollars — rather than international freight. Extra photographs cost nothing at most agents and add a day; a 12-point checklist is what to run them against. Consolidating across sellers is the second advantage, and Group B offers neither.

What is the difference between 1688 and Alibaba.com?

1688 is domestic Chinese wholesale, quoted in yuan, delivering inside the mainland and reachable only through a buying agent, with quantity tiers printed on the listing. Alibaba.com is the international export site, shipping abroad itself under Trade Assurance escrow with no agent involved. One parent company, two entirely different buyers — which is why the names get confused, and why a sheet mixing the two is worth splitting before you act on it.

Which platform is cheapest?

Quantity decides it more than the platform does. One low-value item is usually cheapest direct through Temu or DHgate, where freight already sits inside the price. Three or more items are usually cheapest through an agent, since one consolidated box carries the first-weight charge a single time — 2 kg to the US runs $22–32 on EMS. Five identical pieces belong on 1688.
