Your 1.8 kg Taobao parcel is billing at 4 kg. Here's why.

Carriers bill on volumetric weight when it beats actual weight — and shoe boxes are mostly air. Enter your dimensions to see the real chargeable weight before you pay.

TL;DR

Enter weight and box dimensions and this estimates what each shipping line will cost to your region. The dimensions matter more than most buyers expect: a 40×30×20cm box weighing 1.8kg is billed as 4kg, because carriers charge on volumetric weight when it exceeds actual weight. Shoe boxes are the usual culprit.

Estimate your parcel

Volumetric weight is what actually gets billed

Air freight prices space, not mass. Every carrier calculates a volumetric weight from your box dimensions — length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 6000 — and bills whichever is higher, that or the actual weight on the scale.

The arithmetic catches people out constantly. Four pairs of sneakers in their original boxes fill roughly 40×30×20cm. That is 24,000 cubic centimetres, which divided by 6000 gives 4kg volumetric. The parcel itself might weigh 1.8kg. You pay for 4kg. More than half of what you are shipping is air inside cardboard.

The fix costs nothing: tell your agent to remove the shoe boxes and vacuum-pack. The same four pairs drop to roughly 30×24×15cm, which is 1.8kg volumetric — now below actual weight, so you get billed on the scale instead. On a US route that is the difference between about $34 and about $22. Every agent offers this and most will not do it unless you ask.

Which line to pick

The lines fall into three groups, and the right choice depends more on what is in the box than on how patient you are.

Economy and tax-paid lines — 15 to 35 days

Cheapest per kilo and the default for most hauls. EU-bound tax-paid lines matter more than the price difference suggests: they clear customs with duty already settled, so nothing gets held and no handling fee appears at the door. On a UK or EU route this usually beats a nominally cheaper line that leaves you settling VAT plus a courier's clearance charge on delivery.

EMS and standard post — 10 to 18 days

The middle option. Hands off to your national postal service on arrival, which means delivery to a residential address without a courier depot detour. Reliable, rarely the cheapest.

DHL, FedEx and UPS — 5 to 10 days

Roughly double the economy price. Worth it for something time-sensitive or high-value, since tracking is genuinely granular and claims actually get paid. Note that express carriers present duties for payment far more consistently than postal lines do — factor that into the comparison rather than treating the freight quote as the total.

Duties, and the thresholds that matter

Freight is one number, import charges are another, and the second one surprises more buyers than the first.

  • United States — the de minimis exemption for low-value parcels has been progressively narrowed, and the treatment of China-origin shipments in particular has changed more than once in the last two years. Check the current position before assuming a small parcel clears free.
  • European Union — VAT applies from the first cent; there is no low-value exemption. Duty is charged above €150. An IOSS-registered line collects the VAT up front, which is why tax-paid lines are worth their premium.
  • United Kingdom — VAT from £0, duty above £135.
  • Australia — GST applies from the first dollar on imported goods.
Not legal or customs advice. Thresholds and the treatment of specific origins change with policy. Confirm the current rules for your country before you order, particularly for anything above a couple of hundred dollars.

Consolidation, and when it stops paying

Every agent lets you hold items in a warehouse and ship them together. The saving is real — you pay one first-weight charge instead of five — but it is not unlimited, because the first-weight premium is a fixed cost and per-kilo rates are roughly linear after it.

In practice, consolidating two or three small orders is clearly worth it. Beyond about 8–10kg you are mostly just paying per kilo, and the marginal saving from adding a fifth item is small compared to the risk of sitting on stock for another three weeks. Free storage windows run 60 to 100 days depending on the agent, so there is no urgency — but there is a point where waiting stops buying you anything.

The fee calculator lists the free-storage window alongside the fee for each agent, since the two decisions interact.

What a 2 kg parcel costs by route and line
Southeast Asia · economy$8–15
12–22 days. Cheapest route on this list.
United Kingdom · economy$12–20
20–35 days. Slow, but the lowest cost into Europe.
European Union · tax-paid$18–28
15–30 days. Duty settled in transit, so nothing is held at the door.
Australia · EMS$18–28
10–18 days. Hands to Australia Post on arrival.
United States · EMS$22–32
10–18 days. The most-used route in this hobby.

Questions worth answering here

How accurate is this estimate?

It interpolates between published 2 kg and 5 kg parcel prices per route, so treat it as a budgeting range rather than a quote. The anchors behind it are $22–32 to the US on EMS, $12–20 to the UK on economy and $18–28 into the EU on a tax-paid line, each for 2 kg. Real prices move with fuel surcharges, the origin warehouse and seasonal promotions, so sanity-check an agent's quote with it.

Why is my agent quoting more than this?

Volumetric weight, usually — enter your box dimensions above and watch the chargeable figure jump. Carriers divide length × width × height in centimetres by 6000 and bill that when it beats the scale, so four boxed sneaker pairs at 40×30×20 cm bill as 4 kg against about 1.8 kg actual. After that, look for sensitive-goods surcharges on batteries, magnets or liquids, and remote-area delivery fees.

What is the cheapest way to ship a sneaker haul?

Ask the agent to remove the shoe boxes and vacuum-pack, then take an economy line. The same four pairs shrink from 40×30×20 cm to roughly 30×24×15 cm, which puts volumetric weight under the 1.8 kg on the scale and gets you billed on actual weight instead. On a US route that is about $22 rather than $34. The request costs nothing and almost nobody makes it.

Will I pay customs duty?

Almost certainly in the EU, UK and Australia. EU VAT applies from the first cent with duty above €150, the UK charges VAT from £0 and duty above £135, and Australian GST starts at the first dollar. The US position on low-value China-origin parcels has been narrowed more than once in two years, so check the current rule rather than last year's. None of this is customs advice.

Should I consolidate everything into one parcel?

Up to roughly 8–10 kg, yes — the first-weight charge gets paid once instead of on every parcel, and per-kilo pricing runs close to linear after it. Past that point the marginal saving shrinks against another three weeks of waiting. Free storage leaves room to decide: 100 days at KakoBuy and Sugargoo, 90 across most of the field, 60 at CNFans.

Anything in these albums, at wholesale — including one unit

We work directly with the factory network behind the 30 catalogues on this site. You do not need to reach a minimum to get factory pricing: a single pair comes at the same rate, and larger orders come down from there. Sourcing, QC photographs, consolidation and shipping are handled end to end, so there is one conversation rather than five.

  • Single units at wholesale — no minimum order to qualify
  • Volume pricing — the rate drops as the order grows
  • End to end — sourcing, QC video and photos, consolidation, freight
  • Answered by people — usually within a few hours, UTC+8 business hours
